OLD "STAR"
BRAND DRY-TYPE FIRE SPRINKLERS

Dear
Executive Director of a Fire Protection Organization:
In cooperation with the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Mealane Corporation, formerly known as the Star Sprinkler Corporation based in Philadelphia, PA, is recalling “Star” brand D-1, RD-1, RE-1, E-1, and ME-1 fire sprinkler models made between 1961 and 1976. These fire sprinklers may not operate properly in a fire, thereby placing residents and property at risk.
The Star D-1, RD-1, RE-1, E-1 and ME-1 produced from
1961 to 1976 have been widely used in nursing homes and other health care
facilities across the country. They
may also be found in schools, warehouses, and supermarkets.
The sprinklers are used in dry sprinkler systems only.

This recall does not involve any “Star” product other than the five
models mentioned above, and it is not related to the recent recall of
“Omega” brand fire sprinklers. The Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Care
Organizations is actively supporting the recall in conjunction with the CPSC.
We are utilizing advertising and some direct mail,
where possible, to inform property owners about the recall.
However, in the interest of protecting public safety and preserving the
good and responsible reputation of the fire sprinkler industry, we strongly
encourage you to highlight the recall in your own publications or on your own
web site or to establish a link with the recall web site above.
Mealane Corporation is offering consumers and
property owners free, listed replacement sprinklers and reimbursement of removal
and replacement labor costs when approved in advance.
