"STAR" SPRINKLER RECALL
STAR RECALL FACT SHEET
WHAT:
Nationwide recall
of dry-pendent Star brand fire sprinklers made between 1961 and 1976 -- models D-1,
RD-1, RE-1, E-1 and ME-1.
WHO:
Joint recall by the U.S.
Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Mealane Corporation.
WHY:
CPSC believes the fire sprinklers are defective and could fail
in a fire, exposing the public to bodily injury or death.
WHERE:
Star dry-pendent fire sprinklers are located primarily in
nursing homes and may also be found in hospitals, office buildings, schools,
hotels and other buildings across the nation.
WHAT TO DO:
Property owners with fire sprinklers are urged to find
out if they have Star dry-pendent sprinklers.
They should call 1-800-866-7807 to request a Notice Packet that contains
forms and information on how to identify a Star sprinkler.

to submit a claim.
TERMS OF RECALL:
Mealane Corporation is offering consumers free
replacement sprinklers for the sprinklers being recalled and reimbursement to
help pay for the cost of installing the new sprinklers.
To request replacement sprinklers and to receive reimbursement, customers
must submit a Notice of Claim form and a contractor’s bid for labor
only for replacement to participate fully in the replacement program.
Mealane Corporation reserves the right to obtain competitive bids from
other contractors for the installation of the sprinklers.
WHO IS EGOVILLE & ASSOCIATES?
We are counsel for ESIS, INC, a claims handling organization retained to
represent Mealane Corporation in the recall process.
WHO IS MEALANE CORPORATION?
Mealane Corporation is the name of the company who sold and distributed Star
Sprinklers prior to June 1976. After June of 1976, the assets of Star Sprinkler
were sold to another company who may have continued to sell products under the
“Star” name. As such, Mealane is not responsible for products that were
sold, installed or manufactured after June of 1976.
WHAT DO I DO IF I HAVE A “STAR” PRODUCT
MANUFACTURED AFTER JUNE OF 1976?
We recommend that you contact the US Consumer Product Safety Commission for
information.
WHO IS STAR SPRINKLER, INC.?
Star Sprinkler Inc., a Tyco Company, purchased the rights to use the name
“Star Sprinkler” from Mealane. The products of the current Star Sprinkler,
Inc. are not involved in this recall. Star Sprinkler, Inc. supplies the
replacement sprinkler heads for this program and their product carries their
warranty.
CAN THE HEADS BE REPLACED BY NON-TRAINED
PERSONNEL?
No, the sprinkler heads are custom manufactured and must be measured and
installed by a certified sprinkler company.
